Hello! I am a new member, but I have not had a colostomy. I do have a client that has been recommended for a colostomy and so I have been doing research to help her with her situation. This website has been extremely helpful in both information and in the communications between all of the members. All of you have my deepest respect as I know that your condition and subsequent operations have not been easy to adjust to. I have a question regarding the weekly cost of the appliances that are needed to support the stoma and colostomy. I realize that much of it may be covered by medical insurance or the state, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a number. Another way that I could figure out the cost is just how much and what equipment is used daily or weekly. I could just then calculate the cost through the prices posted on the web. I would appreciate any help that anyone would be able to supply. Thanks!

Hi Leagle! I thought I would give you a general answer to your question until someone with a colostomy (I have an illeostomy) and more knowledge comes along to post. My insurance pays for my supplies so I don't know the costs. I do know that a newbie can use anywhere from one a day to one a week wafer and pouch system. The least expensive are the one-piece systems. The prices are on the medical suppliers sites such as Hollister, Convatec, Coloplast, etc. Some people with colostomies "irrigate" and then use small bandages or pouches. I do not know what this system costs. Depending on each persons situation, more products may be needed. If you can talk to an Enterstomal Therapist, he or she can give you a more concrete idea of what may be required. Hang around and soon someone will post with more info. Best of Luck! KiminCalif
