Hi everyone, I'm new to this board. My mother just had colostomy surgery about a week ago and has been home from the hospital for two days. She's having a bit of problems with the way that the food tastes. Did anyone have any problems with that? Also, the bigger issue is that she can't seem to get her stomach to settle down, so she hasn't eaten much, and she's thrown up twice. Does anyone have any advice? She goes back to see her doctor on Friday.
Is there any food that you found worked well while recovering? Thanks for any and all help!

Hi I had my colostomy done in March 03 due to cancer, after my opp. I found eating anything hard work at first mainly because i didnt feel like having anything. This has got better as time has gone on but i dont seem to eat as much as I use to. One food which i loved was prawns and these made me feel sick everytime i ate them that has eased a little, but when i am not having a good day they can upset me. I have also found that eggs dont agree very well with me and i have to watch what alcohol i drink not that i drink a lot, but apart from that i can eat most things. Hope your mum is doing well and just take one day at a time it does get better. Jo

Hi Katie The problems your mother is encountering sound very similar to those I experienced after my emergency colostomy. I found my stomach in a vicious circle, I didnt feel hungry ( lost appettie ) , when I did eat I could only eat two three mouthfulls, then suffered considerable pain and wind. SO I didnt want to eat cos it hurt , and then I was sick becuse I wasnt eating enough. I lost all sense taste, and my appettie ........ took me about eight weeks to start eating properly again . mashed potato was the cure for me .................and chicken gravy ..... and yoghurt for breakfast. I was told the trick was to eat enough to use up the bile created ( the excees of which was making me sick ) . I would sugget little and often of whatever you mother fancies ....... Best wishes to both of you Demmie
