hi and help. mum is due to have an colostomy op, we have been warned of post op infections but no-one has told us what these are or how long the recovery time are for them. I can only find info for key hole surgery but mum is having open surgery. does anyone have a good website to look at or even a good book.

Hi there. My mom just had the open surgery last week. The doctors actually gave her an epidural for pain , which worked wonderfully. They also made sure she had flushed out her system before the surgery to make sure the bowels were nice and empty. The Doc's also put my mom on antibiotics as soon as she was out of surgery just to be safe and help prevent infection. My mom couldn't have any food 24 hours prior to the surgery, only clear liquids, and she also then had to take a laxitive cocktail to clean everything out. They also gave her an antacid (Zantac) through her IV drip to help keep her stomach calm and everything quite while she recovered

Hi All open surgery is at risk from infection - much more so than keyhole. The digestive system and bowels account for 70% of our immune system - so when they are interefered with in such a major way infection is always as risk. Kaite has outlined the preventative measures usually taken in elective bowel surgery. They also usually keep a close eye on wounds and takes swabs regularly to monitor for possible infection. Its difficult to say how long it takes for infections to clear. It is dependant on many things, like how soon it is spotted, what the infection is , and what the patients condition / immune system is etc etc. I would go back and ask your doctor or your consultant for more details, explaining your concerns. Good Luck , please let us know how you get on, kind regards Demmie
