Hello, I had a bag installed on Aug. 8th do to my colon perferating. They removed 12" of my colon and will have it reversed on Feb. 5th. Can any one out there tell me what to expect compared to the emergency surgery I had in installing this bag. I was a pretty sick fellow! Waiting for a response dhubb2002

Hello, I'm happy to tell you that the reversal is going to be much easier than your last surgery. First of all, you are in much better shape this time. No infection, no emergency surgery, no surprise when you wake up. I had a reversal 18 months after the colostomy. I was only in the hospital for a few days. Bowel movements started on the 8th day. They were frequent at first but by two weeks they started to settle down. By one month I was back to doing all of my daily activities. I hope you find it this easy for you too.
Good luck

Hi and welcome!
My husband was a sick puppy when he originally had his ileostomy done. I was sent for in the middle of the operation, the surgeon's main concern was to get him out of theatre alive and into ICU. He wasn't expected to survive the night.
Well, obviously he did! But he soon started with adhesions, which got to such a state that they simply had to operate on him again, les than 2 years later. He sailed through the operation, without any complications.
From his experience, I think the state of health you go into the surgery is the biggest factor. When he had the ileostomy he'd been seriously ill with an unknown disease. He'd lost almost 50% of his body weight and was very weak. He also went to theatre for a trivial operation, not an ileostomy.
In contrast, all his operations when he's been fit and healthy have been uncomplicated and routine.
I'm sure the doctors wouldn't consider your reversal unless they felt you were healthy enough.
Keep us posted!
