HI. My best friend is scheduled to have a colostomy on January 26th. She's went through chemo and radiation and they still couldn't save her rectum. She's 47 years old, never been sick or in a hospital and she's scared to death that life will never be normal again and she's even thinking of trying to live without the surgery. If anyone has time, I'm not very computer literate and I can't navigate well in this message board but I'd love to write to someone one on one about what it's like. SHe doesn't have a computer nor access to one at this time and she really needs a support group. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Cindy, I would be most happy to corespond with you. I am 44 years old, have had my colostomy for almost two years. First of all, you are a wonderful friend! So I'd be honored to help you any way I can. Secondly, please, if nothing else, tell your friend that she is going to be pleasantly surprised. Her life can go on as normal. I'll fill you in via email.

Hi Cindy, Assuming that your friend is in the States, I'd start off here:
www.uoa.org/chapters_states.htm#top
That will take you to the UOA (United Ostomy Association) page for local chapters. There'll be people who can talk with your friend.
Good luck!

Good on you for being a great friend and trying to take all the information on board. Just remind her that life does become easier and its ok to cry and get frustrated - its all part of the healing process.

Hi,
I had my Colostomy op in Aug 2003 and although I'm currently having Chemotherapy life is almost back to normal. The colostomy is not as scary as it first seems and who needs a rectum anyway:) I know how your friend feels, I was terrified but I would do it all again. Life is precious.

Hi I too have a colostomy its just coming up for my first year on the 10th march 04. Mine was due to cancer and it is permanent i was only 39 when i had it done now been 40. I think your support to your friend will be of great help to her, as i would not be hear if it had not been for my friend who got me to goto the doctors in the first place. so with your support and friendship your friend will make good progress as i have done. She will have to take one day at a time and just when you think you are getting some were something will crop up. I have re-turned back to normal now with the addition of my bag and life is for enjoying and living so i wish you both well and thank you for being such a good friend we all need one. If you would like to chat please get intouch all the best Joanne
