My doctor tells me that a colostomy is a "possible" solution to a non-cancerous condition I have. I've read a little about the surgery, here and elsewhere. However, can people tell me the length of time it took them from the time of their surgery until they were able to return to work full time? Many thanks.

Hi and welcome JJ, Returning to work afterwards depends on several factors, such as whether your job is a physical one etc.
Gary was very weak when he had an emergency ileostomy, so it took him a long time to recover. He returned to full time work 3 1/2 months later...he had an office job.

Hi JJ and welcome,
I have to agree with kathy that the returning to work depends on various factors such as what you do in your job and what sort of shape you are in before surgery, any complications after surgery etc.
I was back to work six weeks after surgery. I am a software engineer, so the work wasn't at all physical.

I am 66 years old and have had my colostomy for about 6 months. I am retired, but I could have returned to a desk job in 30 days after surgery. Shortly after my colostomy I had to have my bladder removed so I also have a urostomy. I wish you the best in the future. 2bagman

Hi there, More details of returning to work etc can be found on the following webpage. www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk/work.html As a rough guide recouperation time for an ostomy is as follows: Key hole surgery | > 1wk in hosp | 1 > 3mths recovery time. Open surgery | >2wk in hosp | 3 - 6mths recovery time. "recovery time" is the what is meant by being able to return to work or school or whatever. The more physical the job the longer the recouperation time should be. Your surgeon will be able to advise more fully on this matter. Please note the above times are very rough esitimates, it depends on the body in question, the severity of the op, for what condition and so on. Hence asking the surgeon is the best answer. Buh bye now, Jason D (29 UK) webmaster and colostomist. www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk
