Thanks to all of you that answered my first post. Patty has been home now for 6 days now and we are slowly getting used to the appliance and the care that is necessary.
A home nurse is coming by a couple of times each week. We had to call her in late Wed nite because we were out of supplies and our order had not arrived yet and Patty blew a seal, (no happy seal jokes). Patty and I were both very upset, and Patty was so frustrated that she just layed on the bed crying.
The nurse showed up and took charge. She was so very good at the process and so kind. She showed us how to build up the area where the bar goes through the stoma so that the bar wouldn't cause a leak. No more leaks so far. The nurse came by today and changed the whole thing again. The waste had managed to get under the sealing paste near the stoma and was causing a nasty redness. Patty also has a yeast infection all around the stoma because of the antibiotics that were given after the surgery. The nurse put some powder on it and said it would be gone in a day or two. It makes me crazy to see Patty hurting like she is, and that she is so uncomfortable with the device so far. Lot's of family and friends have come together to help Patty, (and me), get through this rough beginning. As soon as Patty is mobile enough to talk to all of you, she said that she's looking forward to it. See needs to hear some other stories so she'll know that others have gone through the same hell she's going through right now. If you folks could find the time to drop her a line in her email, I know it would help her.
