Hi, My first reaction is that this is NOT normal and she needs to see a doctor (maybe easier said than done, I know.)
It is normal to pass mucous, and she should have done so (assuming that she still has her rectum) since her operation.
If she is having an actual bowel movement it suggests to me that something like a fistula has formed a channel from her small bowel to the rectum area and this needs to be checked out.
Good luck persuading her!

Agreed so long as it's actual stool. However solid blood stained muscous is possible. When I had my rectum in place I was still passing the odd very dark lump of solid mucous which was stained brown by the blood from the rectal stump as this is where the lumps of solid mucous tend to come from and it is quite convincing that you are having a B.M. She MUST go to the Doc to get this sorted out for her own safety. Hopefully it is just mucous. Buh bye now, Jason D. webmaster and colostomist. www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk
