Hi I am new to the boards and am not registered. I am 14yrs old and had a ileostomy op when I was 9yrs old. I came to the boards with a question so can someone help me? Now I have had my ileostomy for 5yrs, I am looking at the option of reversal! I really really want this reversed but my Consultant has told me to gather as much info as possible. If anyone here has had the op, please reply with ANY info on the reversal as possible. To be more specific, my parents want info on the actual surgery and what happens after...so....any offers?

Hello there, Details of colostomy reversal can be read at: www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk/reversal.html - it is aimed at colostomy patients though, as it is a colostomy-based website. I know you have an Ileostomy, and although I dont know this for certain I think the main difference is that the operation is possibly less likely to be reversable by key hole surgery and that you could possibly need to have it done by open surgery instead - your surgeon would be able to tell you what the case is for you. The most important thing to bear in mind is that as a rough guide you need to have at least 2" of rectum as well as your anus and spincter muscles intact for a reversal to be possible. If you have had your rectum removed and the anus stitched up then i'm afraid a reversal is not yet possible. But I am always hopeful of maybe sometime in the future there will be an operation to possibly reverse ostomists like me, and others, with a "permanent" ostomy. Anyways, the fact that the surgeon has told you to look up info on reversals must mean that you are able to have a reversal, which is good news in itself even if it isnt reversed any time soon. At least it can be done and that is a positive thing to focus on and look forward to. The after effects discussed on the reversals page are the same regardless of the type of bowel ostomy you have, or if you have it via key hole or open surgery. Dont forget if you want to talk this thru with other ostomists, then I can recommend the saturday chat meetings in the chat room - www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk/chat.html - 8pm UK time/3pm EST US. We're open 24/7 but the meeting is when there will be most people there able to offer you advice and help. Take care, and good luck for the future, I hope you have your reversal soon! Buh bye now, Jason D. webmaster and colostomist. www.ostomy.fsnet.co.uk

Hi and welcome. Do you have any of your large bowel left for your reversal, or was it all removed?
If you have just your small bowel, you may want to check out these two boards to see if these options apply to you:
www.j-pouch.org This gives full information about the J-pouch and includes an excellent message board where you can ask questions (like this one).
www.pullthrough.org/ This should give you details about the Pull-through operation, (which is usually more successful in younger patients than older ones.)
Hope you find this helpful, and good luck!
